3.0 quake shakes area at south end of Salton Sea

CALIPATRIA — A magnitude-3.0 earthquake shook the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea early Monday morning but there were no reports of injury or damage.

The 2:54 a.m. temblor was centered in the Obsidian Butte area, about eight miles northwest of Calipatria, according to a preliminary report from the California Institute of Technology

A dispatcher for the Brawley Police Department, which covers Calipatria 10 miles to the north, said there were no reports of injury or damage.

Calipatria is located about 180 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
