50 years ago — Brawley City Councilman Bud Anslyn has been appointed assistant coordinator of civil defense for Region 10-Imperial and San Diego counties. The appointment was made by Maj. Gene W.J. Robertson, state director of civil defense.

40 years ago — Brawley firemen were met with three house fires during the first two days of the year. The most extensive was in a six-room house at 655 S. 3rd St. which sustained $5,000 damage.

30 years ago — Imperial Valley highways were relatively peaceful over the New Year's holiday, the local office of the California Highway Patrol said this morning. Aside from about a dozen arrests for drunken driving, the CHP reported only one accident with injuries over the holiday period.

20 years ago — The year ended on a critical note to the Valley as the rabies outbreak spread to the El Centro area. Public health officials nervously face the year as their final tests done in 1980 revealed two more rabid cats, three dogs including one in rural El Centro, a rabid coyote and a rabid skunk.
