Board sets meeting on varsity boys basketball team

January 03, 2001|By KELLY RAUSCH, Staff Writer

HOLTVILLE — The school board here has scheduled a special meeting for 6 tonight to discuss the Holtville High School varsity boys basketball team, which has been benched after members of the team were reportedly found with liquor in December.

The basketball discussion will take place during the closed session portion of the meeting. Open session starts at 7 p.m., Superintendent Carlos Vega said.

Vega declined to say specifically what aspects of the basketball program the board will discuss.

He did say the issue is under administrative purview and "not necessarily a board situation."

Any action taken may not be reported during open session, Vega said.

Since December, the junior varsity team has played in the varsity squad's place and changes in coaching positions have occurred.

The open session portion of the meeting has one action and discussion item on the agenda. Board members will decide whether to approve an application for funding to purchase library materials for the district's schools.

The meeting will take place in the district boardroom at 621 E. 6th St. in Holtville.
