BRAWLEY — A 74-year-old woman was choked and robbed in her home here Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested one of her neighbors, Ismael Orendain Venegas, 22, of 1100 G St. in Brawley in connection with the robbery a short time later.

A woman called 911 about 3 p.m. Tuesday to report a man matching Venegas' description had entered the home of the 74-year-old Brawley woman, choked her, unplugged her telephone and robbed her.

Brawley police Lt. Henry Graham said the suspect stole $45 and fled toward La Providencia Market on Imperial Avenue.

Brawley police officers Josef Munger, Ron Brazell and John Shepherd were called to the area and saw and detained Venegas, who matched the description of the robbery suspect.

Police officers drove the victim to where Venegas was being held and she identified him as her attacker, then later identified him from a photo lineup, Graham said.

Venegas was arrested on suspicion of robbery, being under the influence of a controlled substance and disabling a phone line.

He is in the county jail this morning with bail set at $50,000.
