Goodsell's future remains undecided

January 03, 2001|By ERIC GALVAN, Sports Writer

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville school board made no final decision Wednesday regarding the future of Holtville High boys varsity basketball coach Mike Goodsell, who has been relieved of his duties in response to an alcohol-related incident involving some of his players.

Goodsell met with the board in closed session and gave his side of the incident, which involved team members caught drinking alcohol off-campus.

After nearly three hours of closed session, the board decided no action would be taken at this point.

Holtville Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Vega did say he would reach a decision on the matter by Monday.

Said Goodsell: "I was happy that the board let me speak. We were able to air out what exactly happened.

"I still maintain that I would like to have my (coaching) job back."

Athletic director John Reschert has been coaching the team since the incident. The Vikings have fielded a varsity team made up mostly of formerly junior varsity players.

According to a source close to the team, four players and two team statisticians involved in the drinking incident already have received in-house punishment, with the most severe action being a 6- to 8-game/tournament suspension.
