HOLTVILLE — The Holtville and Calexico high school duel wrestling meet here Wednesday turned out to be nothing more than a glorified exhibition as only six of 14 weight classes were contested.

The Bulldogs won four of the six contests and took a 54-30 victory.

Calexico coach Jose Jimenez said what hurt the Vikings' chances of making the meet competitive was five forfeits.

"Their empty spots is really what killed them. But that's also what helped us," said Jimenez. "I really think we wrestled well, but this was more of an exhibition than anything."

Holtville wrestled Calexico to a 12-12 tie through four matches, but the Bulldogs outscored Holtville 42-18 from that point.

Jonathan Velasco gave Holtville a 12-6 lead as he pinned Frank Taurel at the 3-minute, 3-second point of their 119-pound contest. That followed a walkover win from the Vikings' Cody Acosta (103) and the Bulldogs' Esteban Jimenez (112) pinning Colt Synder at 1:56.

Eddie Rodriguez tied things for Calexico with a pin in 1:07 of Jacob Cerda in 125-pound action.

The Bulldogs won three of the next four matches on walk-overs as Max Leimgruber (130), Rogelio Pacheco (140) and Aaron Barrios (145) added 18 points to the Bulldog tally.

In 135-pound action Holtville's Larry Iten pinned Joey Arambula 3:21 into their match.

Harry Ramirez (152) picked up another six points for the Bulldogs by pinning Joe Torres with 45 seconds remaining in their contest.

In the final contested match Calexico's Fidel Mendez (171) pinned Rowland Larson in the third period.

The Vikings got walk-over wins from James Hawk (160) and Eric Burnworth (189) and Mario Higadera (215) and Ismael Palanco (275) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with byes.

Said Holtville coach John Kirchenbauer: "Calexico just outwrestled us. They came here ready to wrestle and were just more ready than us. Calexico just beat us anyway you look at it."

Both teams return to the mats at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the Bulldogs traveling to Imperial and Holtville hosting Central Union.

Leading the Wildcats with pins were Michael Duffy, Tim Dowden Bucky Leigh, Andy Buckner and Adam Whittle. Mark Mendibles picked up an 18-3 win, while the rest of Brawley's victories came by default.

Brawley returns to action Saturday as it travels to Spring Valley for the Monte Vista tournament.
