Westmorland City Council authorizes Holt Group to proceed with design, bidding for city curbs and sidewalks

WESTMORLAND — The City Council here has authorized the design and bidding for curbs and a sidewalk along the south side of Third Street between Center and D streets.

Jack Holt of the Holt Group of El Centro went before the Westmorland City Council on Wednesday night to ask for permission to proceed with the design of the sidewalk and was granted that permission.

The sidewalk is part of a four-part project to build sidewalks in the city for pedestrians, particularly for children on their way to school.

The first part of the project was done in 1998 and every year since the city had built sidewalk sections along Second, Third and Center streets. The fourth part of the project is to be completed in 2002.

The upcoming part of the project will cost $10,500 and is funded through the Imperial Valley Association of Governments. Every year IVAG receives funds from the state to divide among the cities of Imperial County for sidewalk construction.

In another matter, council members, city Public Works Director Joe Diaz and Police Chief Fred Beltran discussed blocking off the area between Second and Third streets on C Street because cars block the intersection while drivers drop off and pick up their children from school. The intersection will be closed school days from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The matter was brought up by Beltran only to inform the council of the decision by the school district to block off the intersection.

Beltran also told the council the department is planning to stage an updated community gang awareness project Jan. 18. at the Westmorland Union Elementary School cafeteria.
