50 years ago — Soon to enter its 50th year of publication, the Imperial Valley Press and its companion newspaper, The Morning Post, reached an all-time circulation peak this week with a paid circulation of 7,120.

40 years ago — Growers and lawmakers watched the Imperial Valley farm labor dispute today, trying to decide what legislative attack, if any, to set in motion in Sacramento. Local growers met there with legislators.

30 years ago — Subfreezing night temperatures are expected to continue tonight and Wednesday, ranging from 20 to 25 degrees with some spot field temperatures dipping as low as 17 degrees. The five-day forecast is for continued cold weather with slightly higher temperatures later in the week.

20 years ago — An apparent hunger strike went unnoticed at the El Centro alien detention center until media representatives started calling, according to Peter Larrabee, center superintendent. Larrabee said a handful of aliens may have skipped the noon meal Friday at the center. News reports said the inmates, mostly Salvadorans, were protesting delays in airline flights home.
