IID closes East Highline Canal for maintenance

January 06, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

The Imperial Irrigation District closed the East Highline Canal this morning for maintenance and upgrades and the canal will be out of service through Friday.

IID water department Manager Mike King said the canal serves about one-third of the Imperial Valley, providing water to farmers in the areas around Holtville, Calipatria and Niland.

"We have done a lot of communication on this project," King said, adding farmers have worked with IID on making sure they have the water they need for the week the canal will be closed.

"We have had great farmer cooperation," King added.

He said on Friday IID will start to run water through the canal and by Saturday the canal is expected to be at normal levels.

Southern California Water Co., which runs water plants in Calipatria and Niland, has asked residents there to conserve water throughout the week. The water plants in those communities are fed by the East Highline Canal.

Company officials have said they have taken steps to assure people in those communities are not affected and said they do not expect any interruption in service.
