HOLTVILLE — Jose Galindo scored 24 points and Jose Beltran added 14 as the Central Union boys basketball team defeated Holtville High 57-47 here Friday.

Michael Strong was the game's leading scorer, leading Holtville with 18 points. The Vikings' Eric Cueto added 14.

Central took the opening tip but couldn't convert and Strong made a lay-up one minute into the game. Jose Galindo answered with the first of his seven three-point buckets.

The Vikings took the lead again when Alex Perez hit Strong, who put in another lay-up.

The Spartans then went on the game's first run.

Galindo nailed a three and was fouled. His free throw gave Central a 7-4 lead with 4:30 to go in the first period. Another three put the Spartans up 10-4 before Holtville finished the quarter with two quick baskets.

The second quarter was all Central.

Galindo had four three-pointers and Central went on its biggest run, outscoring the Vikings 23-13 in the period.

The Vikings went into the locker room down 35-23.

After a Teddy Glover fast break basket put Central up 38-26, Holtville went on an 11-2 run that lasted nearly five minutes.

When it looked as if Holtville was about to catch the Spartans, being down just three, Beltran finished the quarter with two threes, extending the Spartan lead to nine.

The Spartans hung on in the slow-paced fourth quarter by narrowly outscoring the Vikings 11-9.

A key stat was Central's three-point shooting. It seemed that the only shot the Spartans would take was from the outside. The Spartans hit 10 threes and missed 19.

The Vikings will be back in action at 7 p.m. Monday at Palo Verde in Blythe. Central plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home in El Centro against Southwest.
