Calipatria council eying IID building for PD

January 06, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

CALIPATRIA — The City Council here will consider Tuesday either buying or leasing an Imperial Irrigation District building on Main Street.

The city is looking for a building to house the Police Department since the existing station house will be leased to the Imperial Valley ROP Steps of Success program.

SOS is a community-resource program that has been operating in Calipatria for about seven months.

During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, officials will vote on authorizing City Manager Romualdo Medina to negotiate with IID officials regarding the empty building. The only restrictions the city has is that the purchase price not exceed $100,000 or a monthly lease payment not exceed $750 a month.

Also Tuesday, the council will decide on a firm to implement a housing rehabilitation grant. The recently acquired grant is for $500,000. More information on the grant was not available at presstime.

The council will vote Tuesday on opening City Hall all five weekdays each week. City Hall is now closed Fridays.

Some council members think it would help the community to have City Hall open for the full work week. Results of a residential survey conducted recently on the matter will be considered.
