Thank You: Marines thanked by United Way for Toys for Tots

January 08, 2001

Toys for Tots has been a Marine Corps program for 52 years. The Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, for the second year in a row, came to the Imperial Valley to help collect toys for needy children in our area. United Way of Imperial County was pleased to again be a part of this wonderful tradition.

This year we raised over 800 toys with their help and the help of KYMA Channel 11, which televised the event live on their newscasts Dec. 14.

These toys were distributed to Neighborhood House in Calexico for their transitional houses and shelter, The Salvation Army, WomanHaven shelter, House of Hope shelter, Catholic Charities and Migrant Head Start in El Centro; Boys and Girls Club of Brawley; and Niland Family Resource Center.

We would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their participation: Maj. Underwood and Sgt. Maj. Cruz and their staff at the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station and Jim Heath and the crew from KYMA Channel 11 who came over to help us with our efforts; Imperial Valley Press for the nice article, which helped promote the drive; Calexico Wal-Mart, El Centro Wal-Mart and Southwest Supermarket in Brawley for allowing us to collect toys at their stores; and every one of you who donated toys to help the needy children have a Christmas present under the tree.

We wish each and every one of you a wonderful New Year!
