Wildcat grapplers take second at Monte Vista

SPRING VALLEY — The Brawley Union High wrestling team took second place among 20 teams in the Monte Vista tournament Saturday.

The Wildcats had 251 points, behind Poway with 335.5.

Leading Brawley were 160-pounder Bucky Leigh and heavyweight Jose Gutierrez, both taking firsts.

Placing second for the Wildcats were Jose Reyes (119), Michael Duffy (125), Hector Carrillo (140) and Miguel Miranda (215).

Brawley took home four third places, from Martin Pulido (112) Tim Dowden (130), Kiddo Moreno (152) and Andy Buckner (171).

Finishing fourth for the Wildcats was Mark Mendibles (135) and placing fifth were Ernest Chavez (145) and Jaime Antuñez (189).

Brawley competes in the Five Counties tournament in Fountain Valley on Friday.

Imperial at El Capitan tournament

LAKESIDE — The Imperial High School wrestling team took third at the El Capitan tournament here Saturday.

The Tigers got first-place finishes from Miguel Campos (112 pounds), Jon Woodard (119) and A.J. Smith (152). Smith was named the outstanding upper-weight wrestler for the tournament. Mike Rodriguez (135) and Miguel Gastelum (171) finished second for Imperial. Sergio Barraza (189), Randy Sanchez (215) and Manuel Miranda (heavyweight) all took fourth.


In other local wrestling action Southwest High's Eddie Conner took fifth at 135 pounds in the Jim Londos tournament in Orange Glen.
