Board interviews candidate with 30 years experience

BRAWLEY — Pioneers Memorial Hospital board members on Thursday interviewed a candidate for the hospital's chief executive officer position and staffers were expected to meet with the individual today.

Leo Haggarty, hospital board chairman, said this morning he and other board members conducted individual interviews with the candidate.

He said he is unsure if all board members had a chance to meet with the candidate, who is from outside the Imperial Valley and has worked in the medical industry for 30 years.

Haggarty said while he liked the candidate, it will be up to the full board to decide whether it wants to offer the position to the person or interview others.

The board's next meeting is set for Jan. 22. There could be an agenda item set for that meeting on filling the CEO position.

However, Haggarty said board members could decide before that to ask Brim Healthcare Inc., the Portland, Ore. firm that manages Pioneers, to present other candidates.

Haggarty said the candidate interviewed has a bachelor's degree in administration and a master's degree in hospital administration and worked for Brim from 1990 to 1999.

Haggarty did not release the name of the individual or provide other information other than to say the candidate has experience as a hospital administrator.

Board member Aleta Shropshire said she met with the candidate Thursday. Other board members were unavailable for comment this morning.

Shropshire said she is unsure how soon the board could make a decision on whether to interview other candidates.

Tom Plantz, Pioneers interim chief executive officer, has said a new administrator could be in place as early as February.

Plantz replaced Claire Kuczkowski, who resigned late last year after leading Pioneers for two years.

Plantz has said he will not be a candidate for the permanent CEO position. He initially signed on to work three months but recently said he would stay on as long as it takes the Pioneers board to fill the position.
