Youth sports: Local junior wrestlers fare well in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Four Imperial junior wrestlers won their weight classes at the SDIKWA pen tournament here recently.

Cameron McNeer won at 100 pounds in the novice class while in the schoolboy division Raymond Elizalde (75), James Smith (95) and Anthony Elizalde (140) all won their divisions.

In the bantam division Quinton Likos (55) took third. In the midget class Matthew Strickell (60) was fifth, Andrew Bush (65) sixth and Alejandro de la Rosa (75) fifth. In the novice class Ulysses Rodriguez (95) was fourth. In the schoolboy division Derrick Wilson (140) was second and Emiliano Valenzuela (140) was fourth. Christopher Vasquez (121) took second in the cadet division.

Brawley Gladiator wrestling

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Gladiators junior wrestling team attended a meet at Mount Carmel High here recently.

The Gladiators earned nine firsts.

In the rookie division Anthony Nuñez (45) won his class. In the bantam division Oscar Lizarraga (55) was first. In the midget division Raymond Liston (55), Ronnie Hernandez (95), Kasey Hammond (112) and Mikey Velasco (103) all took firsts. In the novice class Chauncey Rowe (100), Rusty Garcia and Frank Corona (heavyweight) all placed first while Alex Miranda (103.5) was first in the cadet class.

In the schoolboy division Brawley's Lorenzo Soto (95), Corey Caffarella (105) and Frank Pinedo (110) all took fourth while Cameron Bender (125.5) and John Cardenas (101) took fifth.

In the novice class Aaron Aguirre (105) took fourth while Joseph Muller (112) and Corltland Bender (120) took fifth.

In the midget class Chris Mendoza (60) was second, Anthony Liston (60) third and Nathan Rowe (80) fourth.

In the bantam class Anthony Garcia (75) took fifth. In the rookie class Nick Torres (40) and J.J. Morales (50) each took second.

IVDA swimming

ESCONDIDO — Five Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmers competed in the Escondido Swim Club ironman meet recently and all posted personal best times in most of their events.

IVDA's Elvia Vazquez took second in the girls 8-and-under ‘B' 50-yard butterfly (45.89) and 50 backstroke (47.59). She took fifth in the 100 individual medley (1:43.97), 50 freestyle (41.36) and 100 freestyle (1:32.34)

In the boys 9-10 ‘B' class IVDA's Raul Caro took sixth in the 50 freestyle (37.43). Caro also took second in the ‘C' 100 freestyle (1:23.39) and seventh in the 50 backstroke (49.79) and 50 breaststroke (50.76).

IVDA's Stevie Wills took fourth in the girls 11-12 ‘B' 50 breaststroke (41.39), sixth in the 50 freestyle (30.75) and seventh in the 50 backstroke (38.37).

IVDA's Alexis Vazquez and Julianna Caro also competed in the meet. Alexis swam to personal bests in four of her events while Julianna set personal bests in six of hers.

Flag football league

The Imperial Valley Flag Football League kicked off its first week of play recently with J.D. Glass topping AMAC 12-0.

In other action Desert Heat shut out the Gladiators 26-0. J.D. Glass topped Ogden Power 12-8, J&N Trucking topped Krunk 24-6, Bud Lite knocked off Sanchos 40-19 and PMC downed Beach and Sons 28-19. The Imperial Tigers picked up a forfeit win over Red Dog.

Calexico soccer tournament

CALEXICO — The Calexico Recreation Department held its first grade four-six boys and girls soccer tournament recently.

In the boys tournament Rockwood School topped Blanche Charles 4-3 on penalty kicks to earn the championship.

Jefferson took the girls title with a 2-1 win over Kennedy Gardens.
