Remains of two suspected illegal immigrants found south of Ocotillo

DAVIES VALLEY — U.S. Border Patrol agents made a gruesome discovery Sunday when they found the bodies of two suspected illegal immigrants in this area south of Ocotillo.

Border Patrol agents were on a routine excursion into this portion of the desert when they came upon the skeletal remains, Imperial County Coroner's Office Investigator Gary Hayes said.

The two bodies, apparently both male, are estimated to have been in the desert since September, Hayes said.

A wallet containing a voter I.D. card has yielded a partial identification for one of the two bodies. U.S. authorities are working with the Mexican consulate to identify the bodies and notify relatives, Hayes said.

The location where the bodies were found leads authorities to suspect they had entered the U.S. illegally.

"It's a highly traveled route for undocumented immigrants," Hayes said.

Because of the state of decomposition, autopsies cannot be performed on the bodies. A forensic anthropologist will examine the remains today, Hayes said.
