Six high schools ready for county mock trial competition Wednesday

January 16, 2001|By KELLY RAUSCH, Staff Writer

The Imperial County mock trial competition begins Wednesday as six teams vie for victory in the first trial of the season.

Central Union High School, last year's county champions, 1998 state champs and longtime dominant local mock trial force, faces the team from Calipatria High. Calexico High takes on Imperial High. Holtville High competes against one of last year's semifinalists, Brawley Union High.

Another semifinalist from the 2000 competition, Southwest High, has a bye Wednesday.

Mock trial competitions, in which high school students defend and prosecute legal cases, are staged every year throughout the state. County champions continue to the state competition in the spring.

All trials are in the Imperial County Courthouse in El Centro and run from 6 to about 9 p.m.

The competition, sponsored by the Imperial County Bar Association and the Imperial County Office of Education, is open to the public.
