An Imperial woman was assaulted and robbed Friday morning as she stood on the sidewalk near Eighth Street and Orange Avenue in El Centro looking through her purse for change.

At about 8:10 a.m. the 58-year-old victim was attacked from behind by a single assailant, El Centro police Sgt. Mike Beltran said Saturday.

"The subject came up from behind, grabbed her hair and struck her in the face," Beltran said.

Beltran did not know if the assailant hit the victim with his fist or another object.

After a short struggle, the assailant fled on foot westbound on Orange Avenue with the victim's purse, Beltran said.

The victim was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment of facial injuries, Beltran said.

Responding officers were unable to locate the assailant, Beltran said.

The attacker was described as a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. He is thought to be approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.

The value of the victim's purse and its contents was not available.
