Immigrants flee I-8 crash scene

January 23, 2001

Officers are investigating a hit-and-run collision involving suspected undocumented immigrants who fled the crash scene early Sunday at Interstate 8 and Imperial Avenue in El Centro.

Sonia Ferguson, 37, of Calexico, was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center with minor injuries after her van was struck by another van just before 1 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 at the Imperial Avenue exit ramp when the unidentified driver of the second van drove off the ramp at a high rate of speed. The driver negotiated the vehicle back onto the ramp, where it struck Ferguson's van. Several people, suspected to be illegal immigrants, fled when the van came to a stop.

According to the Highway Patrol, the van is registered to a Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, resident and was not reported stolen. The van, which has been stored, has not been claimed.
