A woman was injured Thursday in El Centro when the sport-utility vehicle she was driving was struck by a car whose driver pulled from a stop sign into the path of the SUV.

The collision occurred about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and La Brucherie Road.

According to the El Centro police Sgt. Mike Beltran, the SUV driven by Elena Alcaraz, 43, of El Centro was headed north on La Brucherie when the car, driven by Mathew Sturts, 42, of Imperial pulled into its path heading west from the stop sign at Euclid.

The car broadsided the SUV causing it to flip onto the driver's side and slide across the roadway.

El Centro firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free Alcaraz from her vehicle. She was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Her husband and 9-year-old daughter also were in the vehicle but were not injured. Their names were unavailable this morning.

Sturts also was not injured.

All parties were wearing seat belts, El Centro police reported.

The accident remained under investigation this morning, police reported.

Details on the extent of Alcaraz's injuries were unavailable this morning. Police at the scene of the accident said she had suffered an arm injury.

Police closed La Brucherie from Villa to Adams avenues for two hours following the accident.
