January 23, 2001

Around 5 p.m. Calexico Police Department officers were notified by the U.S. Border Patrol of gunshots near the New River south of the 1100 block of Wozencraft Street, said Calexico police Sgt. Armando Marquez.

Officers were later informed Border Patrol agents had detained three males, all 15 years old and all Calexico residents, not for gunplay but for making and detonating explosives constructed from household chemicals and products, Marquez said.

The chemical reaction of the ingredients could cause an explosion producing a fire ball, Marquez said.

All three boys were taken to juvenile hall.
