BRAWLEY — An abandoned house here was leveled by fire early Saturday in a scenario regarded as suspicious by local officials.

The Brawley Fire Department received a call at 1:44 a.m. about a burning house at 1028 J St. When the crew arrived at the scene, the structure was fully involved, fire Capt. Jesse Zendejas said.

The house was empty at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported, Zendejas said.

"It was fully destroyed down to the foundation," Zendejas said.

The Brawley Police Department received a report of two individuals running in the area at the time of the fire, Sgt. John Meyers said.

Another report of kids carrying a gas can a block away from the fire led police to a similar container, Meyers said.

The container was dry, filled with dirt and therefore not thought to be connected to the blaze, Meyers said.

Officers talked with neighbors and people in the area but made no arrests, Meyers said.

Nearby abandoned buildings were in danger, but ultimately were undamaged, Zendejas said.

It took firefighters 20-30 minutes to get the fire under control, Zendejas said. The team was back in the station at 2:56 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
