A fire damaged a vacant office in the strip mall behind Fong Restaurant in El Centro.

El Centro Fire Capt. Ken Herbert said the department received a call around 3:30 a.m. regarding a fire behind the restaurant at 1461 S. Fourth St.

Herbert said the fire had already spread to the roof by the time firefighters arrived. The smoke could be seen a block away.

Three fire units responded to the fire, which Herbert said helped firefighters in containing the fire in about 15 minutes. The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter.

Herbert said one of the reasons the fire did not spread to adjacent offices was because of a fire stop — a wall designed to prevent fires from spreading.

The surrounding offices received only minimal water damage.

Investigators were still investigating the cause of the fire this morning.
