Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in El Centro for Paul A. "Poli" Gastelum, 80, of Heber, who died Saturday in El Centro Regional Medical Center. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heber with the Rev. Angelo Risoli officiating.
Burial will be Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.
Mr. Gastelum was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico. He moved to the Imperial Valley with his parents in 1921. He was raised in Heber and attended the old Heber School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1938 and served in World War II. He married Micaela Zamarripa in the early 1940s. He worked for cattle feedlots throughout the Valley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Micaela Zamarripa, in 1968; and sons, Michael Gastelum in 1980 and Tony Gastelum in 1995.
Survivors include his sons, Joe Gastelum of Los Angeles, Paul Gastelum III of San Jose and Raul Gastelum of Heber; daughters, Virginia Arostigui and Sally Velasquez, both of Heber; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Mariano Guerrero of Heber; brothers Ruben and Joe Gastelum, both of El Centro, and Robert Gastelum of Imperial; sisters, Emma Arzaga of Holtville, Alicia Cota of Salinas, Bertha Romero of Heber and Sally Romero of San Diego; 28 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
JOSE M. ESCALERA
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in Calexico for Jose M. Escalera, 75, of Calexico, who died Tuesday in El Centro Regional Medical Center. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Calexico with the Rev. Gerardo Fernandez officiating.
Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.
Mr. Escalera was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Mexicali. He was a self-employed carpenter in Calexico for more than 55 years.
He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Manuela Nuñez and Trinidad Perez.
Survivors include his wife, Celia Escalera of Calexico; children, Jose Eduardo and Mario Escalera and Luz Carmen Paredes, all of Calexico; brother, Lorenzo Nuñez of Mexicali; sisters, Carmen and Aurora Escalera and Jesus Lugo, all of Mexicali; and 10 grandchildren.
LEWAN WARD SAUNDERS-EMERSON
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memory Lawn Memorial Gardens in Phoenix for Lewan Ward Saunders-Emerson, 78, of Phoenix, a former Imperial Valley resident who died Tuesday in Phoenix.
Mrs. Emerson was born May 4, 1922, in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of El Centro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom W. Emerson, in 1984.
Survivors include her son, Michael P. Emerson of San Diego; daughter, Betty Emerson of Phoenix; sister-in-law, Embree Peters of Phoenix; brothers, Babe Saunders of Spanaway, Wash., and Don Saunders of East Flat Rock, N.C.; and sisters, Peggy Elmer of Nampa, Idaho, and Beatrice Herman, Betty Stepp, L'Neve Lyda and Patricia McCrain, all of Hendersonville, N.C.
