Voice: Three cheers for Babbitt! Jobs from mining go to Yuma anyway

January 24, 2001

I am delighted with Secretary Babbitt's decision to prevent another gold mine in Imperial County. The pathetic excuse the mining companies have used to desecrate land in the county has always been that they provide jobs.

Wake up, people. Most of those jobs go to people in Yuma. Do any of the gold mine executives live in Brawley? El Centro? Holtville? I doubt it.

The Quechan Indians have had a history in the county of protecting their lands. Can the gold miners be so insensitive and greedy as to rip up those lands for a few ounces of gold? You bet.
