Soccer: Miramontes scores three goals in Tigers' win

IMPERIAL — The Imperial High School boys varsity soccer squad pounded Borrego Springs 7-2 Tuesday.

The scoring by the Tigers started in the third minute, with the first goal coming from Aurelio Alonso. In the 16th minute teammate Christian Miramontes scored his first of three goals.

One minute later, Miramontes scored his second goal, the third for the Tigers. In the 20th minute Ben Item scored Imperial's fourth goal.

Imperial's first-half scoring ended with Gabriel Villagomez scoring.

Borrego Spring's Jose Troncoso scored his first of two goals in the 29th minute of the first half.

In the third minute of the second half Miramontes tallied his third goal.

Borrego Springs had few scoring opportunities in the second half, but capitalized on one in the 35th minute when Troncoso scored his second goal.


Imperial, on the other hand, had several opportunities in the half but would only capitalize on one more after Miramontes' early goal, as David Adams finished Imperial's scoring in the 35th minute.

Imperial played a good passing game throughout, creating many scoring opportunities, while Borrego Springs never seemed to get into the rhythm of the game.

"I thought we played well as a team. The technical passes that score goals were being made and everything went well," said Imperial head coach Wolfgang Horner.

The Tigers, (5-3, 2-0 in Desert Valley League) play at Julian at 3:15 Thursday.

Brawley 2, Holtville 1

HOLTVILLE — The Brawley Union High boys soccer team used two second-half goals to get past Holtville 2-1 here Tuesday.

Gerardo Contreras and Hector Martinez scored for the Wildcats.

"We were lucky to come home with a victory," said Brawley coach Frank Felix. "Holtville played an excellent game."

The Wildcats (5-5-4) will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Blythe against Palo Verde. Holtville next plays at home against Southwest at the same date and time.

Central 5, Palo Verde 2

BLYTHE — The Central Union High School boys soccer team stopped Palo Verde 5-2 here Tuesday.

Ivan Bojorquez scored two goals for the Spartans (6-4-3). Francisco Espinoza, Luis Beltran and Rafael Ojeda added one goal each for Central.

"We played well," said Spartan coach Jim Graham. "We wanted to get out of their without any injuries and get everything ready for Friday's game with Calexico. It was good to come out with a win on the road."

Central will return to the pitch at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Calexico.

Calexico 4, Southwest 2

CALEXICO — Antonio Cruz and Francisco Melendez each scored two goals to lead Calexico to a 4-2 win over Southwest here Tuesday.

Girls action

Central 1, Palo Verde 0

Stormie Morton scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime to get the Central girls past Palo Verde 1-0 in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Tuesday.

Jackie Morton earned the shutout in goal for the Spartans.

Central (6-8, 3-0) will take a break from IVL play to travel to Imperial to take on the Tigers at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Southwest 1, Calexico 0

The Southwest High girls edged Calexico 1-0 in IVL girls soccer action here Tuesday.

The Eagles Paola Vasquez found Rosa Saldaña, who scored lone goal of the contest.
