CALIPATRIA — Officials here have approved The Holt Group of El Centro to administer and implement a housing rehabilitation program grant for $500,000.

The City Council here Tuesday night approved The Holt Group for the work after it was the only firm that applied for the job.

Later the council, sitting as the city Redevelopment Agency, decided to enter into a contract with Urban Futures Inc. of Tustin for redevelopment consulting services.

City Manager Romualdo Medina said the city has been searching for an RDA consultant.

Urban Futures also is contracted locally by the cities of Calexico, El Centro and Brawley.

The City Council granted Police Chief Reggie Gomez permission to purchase the furniture inside the Police Department from former Police Chief Ken Perez for $1,000.

The furniture was brought to the station when Perez took the job. It was left there when Perez departed.

Because the Police Department is going to move into the old Imperial Irrigation District building, a decision had to be made whether to keep the furniture.

Gomez decided to try to purchase it from Perez. They negotiated and agreed on the price.

Gomez told the council the actual value of the furniture is about $10,000. It includes a desk, five chairs, a credenza, a file cabinet, four conference chairs and a plant stand.

Gomez also sought permission to purchase a pickup to use as a utility vehicle but the council decided to postpone that matter until more research could be done.

If the truck is acquired, Gomez said he would will turn his current vehicle into another police squad car and he would drive the pickup. The council appeared to prefer purchasing another sedan.

That matter will be decided during the next council meeting.
