50 years ago — Carolyn Tamblyn, 17-year-old Imperial Valley Union High School senior, has been named the district winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution good citizenship award.

40 years ago — Tuesday's decision by the Imperial Irrigation District's Board of Directors to enter into a contract with Standard Oil Co. of California has been seen by Valley leaders as a possible trend for big companies to show more interest in this area, said IID directors.

30 years ago — Pickets from the United Farm Workers converged on the Federal-State Farm Labor Service office early and forcibly prevented workers from boarding a farm labor bus from the Abatti Produce Co. UFW pickets surrounded the bus and no one was permitted to get through.

20 years ago — Fifty-three Cubans were expected to arrive today at the El Centro alien detention center, according to Harry Malone, assistant superintendent. The Cubans, the second load to arrive at the center, were picked up in the Miami area, where they were living without work, food or shelter after they apparently had been abandoned by sponsors.
