Our Opinion: Meeting a need?

January 30, 2001

It is good to see the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors is interested in creating more public involvement. That is what a government agency should strive for. In this case, the board has changed the hours of its meetings twice a month. Public sessions will start at 5 p.m. two times a month, starting with the first meeting in February.

The board has called it something of an experiment. The board wants to see if more people attend the meetings if they are at a time when more people are off work. It's worth a shot.

We do, however, have some concerns. We have, for the most part, seen many people from the Imperial Valley attend the meetings. Whether they have an interest in major power or water issues, there are certain people who always attend the meetings and regularly express their opinions. We would hate to see these people find themselves unable to attend.

Other people, if they care about an issue, will find some way to attend public meetings at whatever hour they are held. Still, there are those people who would like to attend the meetings but simply cannot in the early afternoon. Maybe there are IID staffers who would like to attend the meetings but cannot do so in the afternoon.

Since the board has taken the action, we urge the Imperial Valley community to take advantage of this opportunity. Now people can make themselves aware of just how critical the issues facing IID are. And IID issues are critical to our present and our future, as critical as any issues in our Imperial Valley. There are few better ways of developing an understanding for the district and its operations than attending board meetings, hearing what the directors and staffers have to say and questioning the directors.

That is the public's right and we are pleased to see the IID board is acknowledging that. Only through public participation can the best decisions be made to protect the people's interests.
