OCOTILLO — A Brawley man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in connection with a traffic collision Saturday that left his passenger critically injured.

Nelson Flores, 19, of Brawley was driving his car east on Interstate 8, approaching Imperial Highway about 10 a.m. when his car drifted off the road, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

Flores overcorrected, causing the car to skid broadside off the highway into the center divider, striking the guard rail, said Highway Patrol Officer Richard Bird.

His passenger, Marcos Gonzalez, 20, of San Diego, sustained major injuries in the crash and was flown to University of California San Diego Medical Center for treatment.

Hospital staff listed his condition as critical this morning.

Flores suffered minor injuries. He was treated at El Centro Regional Medical Center before being booked into the county jail.

Information on whether he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol or some other drug was unavailable this morning.

Information on his bail or custody status also not available.
