Arson suspected in Video 2000 blaze

January 30, 2001

A small fire at a video store in El Centro early today is being investigated as a suspected arson.

Burning videos in the night-drop slot caused some damage to the Video 2000 store at 1111 S. Fourth St. shortly before 12:30 a.m., officials said.

"It appears something was put into the night drop slot which started to catch things on fire," said El Centro police Sgt. Mike Crankshaw.

A 911 call alerted police and fire crews to the fire, Crankshaw said. Information was sketchy this morning, but the fire was mostly extinguished before firefighters arrived on the scene. Police officials believe an officer on the scene may have helped fight the fire.

El Centro fire Capt. Wayne Cartee said firefighters stayed around to dampen some hot spots in the fire and clear smoke from the business.

Also this morning, fire crews were called to a Dumpster fire near 460 State St. about 3:40 a.m. Firefighters spent an hour extinguishing the blaze in the commercial Dumpster, Cartee said.
