The El Centro Elementary Teachers Association will stage a rally today at the corner of 12th Street and Broadway in El Centro.
The rally will begin at 3:30 p.m. and is expected to last an hour, said Bruce Roberts, ECETA president.
The event is meant to generate community support for teachers in their continuing and increasingly bitter contract dispute with the school district, a dispute now into its second year. Among local districts, Roberts said, only El Centro elementary has failed to come to a resolution with its teachers for the 1999-2000 school year.
"A mediation session is set for Wednesday morning," Roberts said, "and our members just want to remind the administration and board that a quality education begins in the classroom, and teachers are the cornerstone of that educational experience."
On Wednesday the ECETA bargaining unit and the school district's outside attorney will meet with a state mediator and resume direct negotiations. Teachers are hopeful something positive will come from the meeting, Roberts said.
