Wildcats keep IVL record perfect

January 31, 2001|By CHRIS GRANT, Sports Editor

Four wins down, four games to go.

The Brawley Union High School boys basketball team completed its improbable run through the first half of Imperial Valley League play, dispatching Southwest 52-29 in El Centro on Tuesday. The win was the Wildcats fourth in the IVL, improving their league mark to 4-0.

Bradley Goff hit a trio of three-pointers to help the Eagles keep the contest close in the first quarter. Southwest sported leads of 9-5 and 14-8 before three-point baskets by the Wildcats' Wheeler Morgan and Richard Santana tied the game at 14 after one period.

Southwest's Corey Williams scored the first basket of the second quarter, giving the Eagles their final lead 16-14. Led by Alex Sonneville and Morgan, Brawley went on a 15-4 run to close the half, taking a 29-20 advantage in at the break.

"We got into the flow of the game," said Wildcat assistant coach Rahsahn Overton of the second-quarter outburst. "Southwest came out real hard, but we just got into the flow."

That flow carried over into the third quarter as Brawley pitched a shutout, outscoring the Eagles 13-0 in the third period. Morgan scored four of this team-high 12 points in the third and Santana added four points and grabbed six of his game-high 10 rebounds.

The fourth quarter was more of the same. Southwest jumped out with six quick points in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but the Eagle rally wilted under the stifling Brawley press. Led by Sonneville and Santana, the Wildcats closed the game with a 10-3 run, putting the Eagles away.

"We made a couple of big plays," Overton added. "The biggest thing is we're in better shape than the other teams."

Sonneville finished with 11 points. Mark Rivera had 10 points and three steals for the Wildcats.

Goff led the Eagles with 13 points. Williams had five points, five rebounds and five steals.

Next up for Brawley will be a showdown with Calexico in a game that could decide the IVL champion. Overton thinks Tuesday's win should benefit the Wildcats immensely as they prepare for Friday.

"This is a wonderful springboard," he said. "That's going to be a good matchup."

Brawley (11-8, 4-0) will test Calexico at 7 p.m. Friday in the Bulldogs' gym. Southwest (1-3 IVL) will next play at home against Central on the same date and time.
