Academic decathlon for local high schoolers under way today, Saturday

Students from Central Union High School, Imperial High School and Southwest High School are competing today and Saturday in the Imperial County academic decathlon.

Each team of nine students will compete for individual awards and total team scores. The winning team will go to Los Angeles to participate in the state competition in March.

Students competed in the speech and interview portions of the event today. Saturday the teams will compete in a series of written tests including language and literature, mathematics, art, music, economics and science.

The Super Quiz competition, "Concepts of the self: philosophy, psychology and religion," will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday. Open to the public, the Super Quiz competition will be in the Imperial County Office of Education's Farrar Leadership Center, 1398 Sperber Rd. in El Centro. This year's Quizmaster is Ronald Gage-Mosher from Imperial Valley College.

The competition, sponsored by the El Centro Kiwanis Club and Imperial County Office of Education, features judges selected from the community, Kiwanis members and personnel from ICOE, San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus and IVC.

The awards ceremony and dinner buffet will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Four Seasons Buffet and Grill at 100 N. Imperial Ave. in El Centro. Parents and other members of the community are invited to attend. Team members' dinners are prepaid, but all other dinners are $10 per person.
