50 years ago — About 7,000 to 7,500 shed and field workers were out of work in the Imperial Valley when some 50 sheds shut down due to the nationwide railroad strike. More than 400 cars were left standing on the tracks.

40 years ago — House Speaker Sam Rayburn has appointed Rep. D.S. Saund (D-Westmorland) chairman of the Mexico-United States Interparliamentary Group of the House of Representatives. The group will meet next week in Guadalajara.

30 years ago — Participants in the California Mid-Winter Fair, with its theme of "Circus Days," are preparing for the grand opening Feb. 26. Slated for thousand of fair-goers are displays of livestock, including cattle, horses, swine, sheep and poultry; and hundreds of commercial exhibits and educational features such as the Imperial Valley Pioneers' Museum.

20 years ago — It will soon be the Year of the Rooster and members of the Valley's Chinese community are preparing to celebrate the event. The Year of the Rooster starts Thursday and continues through Jan. 24, 1984.
