Voice: EC Elementary publication forgot about teachers

February 03, 2001

In a recent addition to this newspaper, the El Centro Elementary School District attempted to make the public aware of its many achievements. It praised its janitors. It lauded its librarians. It extolled the importance of parent involvement. It touted some of its successful programs.

Make no mistake, these are all vital to the success of our children's education. But one group was glaringly omitted from the praises of the district — its teachers. Where would the district be without its teachers?

And so I want to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to all the hard-working teachers of the El Centro Elementary School District, and indeed of all the school districts in the Imperial Valley. Thank you for the many hours you spend, sharing your knowledge, trying to prepare our children to become responsible, successful adults. Thank you for investing your own money in materials that will enhance what our children learn. Thank you for the many extra hours you devote, both before the school day begins and after it ends, helping, disciplining, teaching, coaching and loving our children. Thank you for the time you take to call and to meet with parents so that we may know what is happening with our children's education. Thank you for the hours you spend every evening preparing exciting lessons, correcting papers and performing "extra duties" to enhance to educational experience of our children. Thank you for the weeks you spend every summer staying up-to-date, learning and re-educating yourselves so that you can be better teachers for our kids.

We truly need our teachers, and we need the best teachers, to enable our children to compete in this 21st century. Fortunately, this valley is blessed to have many of the finest teachers that are available. Thank you for all that you do!
