Calexico slates celebration for city's 93rd anniversary

CALEXICO — The 93rd anniversary of this city will be celebrated in early April with three days of events, including a reception for local pioneer families, a downtown block party and a fiesta in Rockwood Plaza.

On April 5 the city of Calexico will host a reception in the lobby of the historic Hotel De Anza senior apartments.

Honoring the pioneering families of Calexico with photo displays and a recognition ceremony, the event also will include a food fair put on by various Calexico restaurants. The reception will start at 6 p.m. and tickets can be obtained through the Calexico Chamber of Commerce at 357-1166.

Starting at 3 p.m. April 6, the Calexico Business Improvement District and the Chamber of Commerce will stage a "downtown extravaganza" block party. Featuring music, raffles, prizes and discounts at downtown shops, the event will run through the evening. For more information call Roy Dorantes of Western Auto at 357-6894.

On April 7 Rockwood Plaza will be the site of the 10-hour "Fiesta Calexico" featuring food and music. The fiesta will be sponsored by the Calexico chamber.

In conjunction with all three events, the Calexico Arts Commission will stage entertainment at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus. Most of the entertainment will be staged either in Rodney Auditorium or on the Rollie Carrillo Quad in the center of the campus. Local artists will be asked to show their artworks throughout the three-day event.

Those wanting to participate in any of the planning sessions for the anniversary events can do so at 5:15 p.m. every Thursday at main conference room of SDSU-IV. Local pioneer memorabilia is being requested.
