Five people injured in single-car collision

CALEXICO — Five people were injured here Friday when the car in which they were traveling collided with a concrete canal head gate here.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Victor Manuel Hernandez Herrera, 22, of Michoacan, Mexico, was driving a sedan west on Anza Road west of Ferrell Road when it went off the roadway and collided with the head gate shortly after 7 p.m.

The vehicle became disabled and its five occupants, including Herrera, were detained by Border Patrol agents as suspected undocumented immigrants.

Herrera, Eligia Nievas Correa, 41, Adelia Romero Martinez, 27, and Araceli Torres Romero, 22, all of Michoacan, were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Enedina Torres Romero, 23, of Michoacan was transported to El Centro Regional with moderate injuries.

No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The collision is under investigation.
