CALEXICO — Emergency crews took a man to El Centro Regional Medical Center on Sunday after he accidentally shot off his thumb with a shotgun.
According to County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jim Burns, the man, whose name was not available, was shooting at some birds on his property when the accident occurred.
Sheriff's logs indicate the incident occurred about 10 a.m. Sunday near Highway 98 half a mile east of Bonds Corner Road.
County fire Capt. Lon Hettinger said the man accidentally shot his right hand with a 12-gauge shotgun, severing his thumb.
"While putting the shotgun down, he had his hand over the end of barrel and the shotgun discharged," Hettinger said.
Hettinger said county firefighters rendered medical aid and waited for a county sheriff's deputy, who took the shotgun.
The man is employed by Mission Organic, based in Salinas.
