City Council action on Third Street sidewalk expected Wednesday

February 06, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

WESTMORLAND — The Westmorland City Council is expected to take action Wednesday on a resolution that would give the city $10,400 to build a sidewalk along the south side of Third Street between Center and D streets.

The money would be provided by state Senate Bill 821, article 3, which states that every county in California must set aside 2 percent of its local transportation fund to be used for bicycle and pedestrian facilities; in other words sidewalks, said Jorge Galvan of The Holt Group in El Centro. The Holt Group serves as the city engineer.

On Jan. 24 the Imperial Valley Association of Governments board approved the money for Westmorland.

The Holt Group on Wednesday will ask the council to pass a resolution to receive the funds. IVAG requires a resolution be passed by a city to receive the money.

Construction on the sidewalk would start in April and last about three months.

The council also will consider awarding a contract to California Pavement Maintenance Co. to repave streets in Westmorland.

In an earlier meeting, the council decided to seek a contractor to repave streets and authorized Jack Holt of The Holt Group to seek a bidder.

Galvan said California Pavement Maintenance was the lone bidder on a contract of $46,537.88 to repave the city's streets.
