Thank You: String Fling, Valley people praised

February 06, 2001

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the folks who hosted the 2001 String Fling!

For those who are unfamiliar with this endeavor, let me explain that it is a contest that follows the rules of the National Old Time Fiddlers Association. Not only are there fiddlers of all ages competing for trophies and prize money, there is also a picking contest and a band scramble where a mix of musicians' names are pulled out of a hat and then expected to perform as groups. What fun! What a lot of work!

This is the second year this event has been held and the second year I have brought my son to compete. It is a long drive (with the pileup in Cajon Pass this year, it took nine hours to get to El Centro), but it was definitely worth it! The facility at the fairgrounds was very nice, with ample seating and lighting — I would especially like to point out that the sound system was awesome! This was a huge task to pull off and everyone involved deserves many thanks, especially those who donated freely of their time and money.

I'd also like to compliment the folks I met in El Centro. We stayed in a local motel and ate several meals out and everyone who helped us was very nice. It is really great that you have members of your community who can put on an event of this size and have the town willing and ready to support it.

Finally, I would especially like to thank the gracious folks in the emergency room at El Centro Regional Medical Center who provided care to my son after he took a nasty fall. There were patients there in more serious condition but everyone still took the time to be caring and kind to us.

You have a great town and I look forward to visiting again.
