CALEXICO — U.S. Customs Service inspectors seized almost 190 pounds of cocaine and arrested a Calexico man at the downtown Port of Entry late Tuesday.
Benny Navarro, 26, a Mexican citizen who resides in Calexico, was arrested after inspectors found a hidden compartment in the bed of the pickup he was driving, according to a press release from the Customs Service.
The incident began about 10:30 p.m. after suspicious U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service inspectors referred Navarro's vehicle to a Customs inspector for further inspection.
Customs inspectors found 82 packages of cocaine weighing 189.6 pounds in a raised compartment in the bed of the truck.
Navarro was in the county jail today, where he was awaiting arraignment on a federal drug smuggling charge.
