50 years ago — Fred Beck of Los Angeles, author of "Second Carrot from the End," will crown the Carrot queen at the Imperial Carrot Carnival in Holtville. The crowning ceremonies will be Feb. 17.

40 years ago — The last wrestling activity and the biggest of the year is slated for Saturday in the Holtville High School gymnasium. The Holtville Viking grapplers will host the first Mountain-Desert League wrestling tournament.

30 years ago — United Farm Workers pickets were out in force and having their pictures taken by three men from the British Broadcasting Co. The TV crew moved first to the Calexico Port of Entry, where UFW pickets had gathered.

20 years ago — County Health Officer Dr. L. Lee Cottrell said Monday the Valley's rabies epidemic, which has resulted in the destruction of about 500 animals since November, is under control. The outbreak was contained, Cottrell pointed out, without a human death.
