The Dynamo Under-12 Soccer Club of El Centro is set to square off against some of the best teams in the state in the prestigious California State Cup in the Palm Desert Soccer Complex over the weekend.

Dynamo and 63 other teams from the state will start pool play Saturday. The tournament will last four weekends.

Dynamo will kick off play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Conejo Valley United. On Sunday Dynamo will face the Southwest Soccer Club at 9:30 a.m. and Arsenal at 3:30 p.m.

The top two teams from the 16 brackets will advance to the next round. Each bracket will have four teams.

The tournament will be the first state cup for the young squad.

"We've done well in two years," said head coach Jim Graham.

"I feel they're ready for the challenge as long as they are focused. One goal at this level can mean the difference between elimination or advancing to the next round."

Jose Villareal, 11, of Holtville, a midfielder for Dynamo, said, "I'm excited. I've never been to a state cup and I'm excited to go."

"I think we'll do good and if we win it I'm going to celebrate," he added.

Jonathan "Mosquito" Marin, 12, of El Centro, another midfielder, said, "I'm a bit nervous because I'm afraid we might lose and not make it to the final."

His confidence was apparent, though, when he said, "We'll probably win it."
