50 years ago — Dice games, card games and prostitution are illegal in certain parts of Imperial Valley. At one card room in Imperial, a professional dice table openly does business.

40 years ago — Jaquetia Boren, 18, of Calipatria left Emmett Finley auditorium in Holtville on Friday as the 1961 Miss Imperial Valley. The selection was made following a two-hour competition.

30 years ago — The McCray twins, Billy and Benny, are known as the world's largest twins. Billy tips the scale at 640 pounds while Benny tops 660. The pair was touring Calexico on Wednesday prior to their appearance at the Indio Date Festival.

20 years ago — County Health Officer Dr. Lee Cottrell apparently spoke too soon this week about Imperial County's rabies epidemic being under control; another case of canine rabies turned up Tuesday in Calexico.
