The Southwest High boys varsity soccer team beat the Calexico Bulldogs 1-0 on Friday to stay alive in the Imperial Valley League championship race.

The victory puts Southwest at 5-3 in the IVL (12-8 overall) while Calexico fell to 6-1-1 in the IVL (8-3-4 overall).

The only goal in the game came in the fourth minute as Jorge Renteria scored off a corner kick. A teammate centered the ball into the penalty box from the corner and a defender tried to head it clear but instead popped it into the air. Renteria waited for the ball to come down and struck it before it hit the ground with a bicycle kick.

Calexico later had an opportunity to tie the game when it was awarded a penalty kick by the referees. Referees Jose Ortega and Max Leimgruber discussed whether the foul was inside the box but finally decided it was a penalty kick.

The shot was to the left of goalkeeper Francisco Flores, who read the attempt well and blocked it.

Calexico then took the initiative. The Bulldogs attacked constantly and Southwest defense committed several fouls but Calexico lost the ball too often on bad passes.

In the 23rd minute of the first half a Southwest player received a second yellow card leading to an automatic red card. He was sent off the field for the remainder of the game.

The game started heating up as both teams fouled and retaliated.

In the 25th minute of the second half a Calexico player received a direct red card and was ejected after he intentionally elbowed a Southwest defender, leaving Calexico with 10 men on the field. The Calexico player had been knocked down moments before in a hard but clean tackle as the referees let the play continue.

A minute later, another Southwest defender was elbowed in the face. This time the referees did not see the incident.

The incident started when a Southwest defender fouled a Calexico attacker. Both players fell to the ground. As the players were getting up, the Calexico player swung his elbow and hit the Southwest player in the mouth.

The Southwest player had to be sent off the field because of some minor bleeding from the mouth.

Another foul the referees seemed to miss was in the last minute of the game when Southwest forward Armando Burke was slide-tackled from behind by a Calexico defender inside the Bulldogs penalty box. The Southwest bench protested to no avail.

Despite the rough play and Calexico advances, Southwest held on for the win.

Rafael Contreras, Southwest head coach said, "I liked their (his players') behavior. In the first game they (Calexico) tied us after we had a 2-1 lead and then beat us in extra time. This time we knew how to not lose control of the game."

Southwest will face Holtville at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Holtville while Calexico will face Central Union in El Centro for the "Copa Del Valle" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
