IID employees make gruesome discovery: bodies of man, woman

February 13, 2001|By MARCY MISNER, Staff Writer

HOLTVILLE — Imperial Irrigation District employees found the body of a man at Drop 2 of the All-American Canal on Monday afternoon, and when employees drained water from the drop, a woman's body was found submerged in the water.

Chief Deputy Coroner Sgt. Rick Macken said the bodies could be those of undocumented immigrants.

"We'll be looking into that issue as well as their identity," Macken said.

Autopsies were being conducted today.

"They saw one decedent surface and it did not appear he had been in the water for a long period of time. The decedent was coming to the surface with the current and being pulled back below the surface," Macken said.

The sighting of the first body was reported about 4 p.m. Monday.

Staff drained Drop 2 to get the body and found the second body submerged in the drop. The second body also was not thought not to have been in the canal long.

County coroner investigators were working to identify the bodies this morning, Macken said.
