One man is dead and two people injured after a head-on collision on Evan Hewes Highway on Wednesday.
A pickup driven by Alfonso De La Cerda, 78, of Seeley was traveling in the westbound lane of Evan Hewes west of Bennett Road about 6:30 p.m. when it crossed the center line. The truck drove directly into the path of an oncoming sedan, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
The vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lane.
Though wearing a seat belt, De La Cerda was killed in the crash.
"He appears to have sustained numerous blunt trauma injuries from the accident," said county Chief Deputy Coroner Sgt. Rick Macken.
An autopsy scheduled to be performed Saturday is aimed at determining the cause of death, Macken said.
The driver of the other vehicle, El Centro resident Jeffrey Robert Buzzi, 32, sustained moderate injuries. His passenger, Kristy Lyn Windy, 24, also of El Centro, sustained minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts. They were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center.
