An El Centro man sustained minor injuries when his car collided with a big rig on Forrester Road at Interstate 8.

Juan Alvarez, 39, was heading north on Forrester Road at 8:15 a.m. Thursday when the tractor-trailer made a left turn into his path.

The 78,000-pound rig, which was hauling eight new vehicles, was stopped in the southbound lane of Forrester Road waiting to turn left onto the I-8 eastbound onramp behind another big rig.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Michael Scanlon of Riverside, the 45-year-old driver of the truck, looked and saw no vehicles approaching before he made his turn. The other rig which had been in front of Scanlon had continued south on Forrester.

Alvarez, anticipating the truck was going to turn in front of him, took his foot off the accelerator. When Scanlon turned, Alvarez honked his horn and flashed his high beams but was unable to avoid the collision, the press release states.

The front end of the car struck the right side of the truck.

Alvarez was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center with minor lacerations and complaints of pain.

Scanlon was uninjured.
