50 years ago — Only one bid was received for the construction of the proposed new high school building and shop in Imperial. The lone bid was submitted R.J. Dawn Construction Co. of Inglewood, and was for $155,000 more than funds available.

40 years ago — The unions struck Don Brock's asparagus operation southwest of El Centro and 60 domestic workers reportedly left their jobs. Brock is the 19th grower hit by the AFL-CIO in their attempt to organize farm labor and kill the bracero program.

30 years ago — Amateur enthusiasts were sending an assortment of missiles into the air. Sunday morning in a desert near Glamis the members of the Imperial Valley Rocket Society hope to extend one more of the numerous successful amateur rocket launchings.

20 years ago — Keiko Richardson went to Las Vegas to buy shoes and attend a convention of shoe wholesalers. She nearly ended up losing her life. Richardson, an El Centro resident, narrowly escaped death in the Feb. 10 fire that killed eight people in Las Vegas.
